At Last Light, Community-oriented, Environmental, and Social Governance are a critical part of our philosophy.
As a business formed by a diverse executive team, we believe that it is our responsibility to give back to the community that allows us to thrive.
To this end, our business will marry community oriented giving to ESG. This allows us to achieve that warm fuzzy feeling of having done something good that helps those around us, where we can visibly see the impact our contributions are having. This will serve as a reminder of the good that people can bring in the world when we work together to achieve common goals.
Our founding members have grown up in an Ontario that had notably colder and more snow filled winters than we experience today. This has been quite an alarming reminder of the realities of climate change. Some of our founders also experience extreme environmental sensitivities related to pollution and environmental mismanagement by industry.
With these things in mind, we feel a need to be leaders in the long term sustainability of the species, reducing our emissions and environmental impact.
As part of these goals, Last Light will ensure that destination charging is available at all locations we operate, to reduce reliance on ICE vehicles. As our revenue grows, we will also pursue methods to ensure we are a carbon-negative business that reduces climate impact beyond just our own footprint.
To achieve our environmental goals in the most dollar efficient means possible, our CEO has taken the introductory program with Effective Altruism to grow her awareness and understanding of doing good better. Similarly, once we are through our initial growth and are closer to meeting revenue targets, Last Light will donate 10% of all profit to highly effective charities. This will help transform the lives and experiences of people worldwide, to grow the potential of the human species.
How a business is run matters. Every person has a role to play in our success, and their contributions need to be recognized.
In lieu of a typical bonus structure, Last Light will give back a percentage of its profit to its employees. This embodies the spirit of mutual cooperation, and should help encourage all employees to act in the best interests of the company rather than in their self-interest. This will be done through Class B shares. Class B shareholders will receive 25% of profits on a quarterly basis, starting at a date to be determined. Class A shareholders will receive 10-25% profits when dividends are announced. The remaining 40-65% will be reinvested into the business and community goals.
Against the backdrop of a growing relative poverty in Canada due to stagnating wages and rising costs of living, this should help to increase the social and financial wellbeing of our employees. Studies have shown that social and financial wellbeing leads to improved mental and physical health outcomes, and we believe that empowering our employees will lead to them living more fulfilling lives.
When people work together, we can do the impossible.
